Algona is the county seat of Kossuth County. It
was founded by Ambrose and Asa Call in 1854 and incorporated in
1872. It is bordered
on three sides by the East Fork of the Des Moines River. The
town includes about 6,000 residents and has a number of community
features including: the Algona Aquatic Center which was completed
in 2001, the Algona Family YMCA, a number of city parks, a library,
the Sullivan Building, and the World-Famous Algona POW Nativity
Scene. Algona also
includes Fortune 400 & 300 businesses and two school systems,
a public and a parochial. Iowa
Lakes Community College is located on Highway 169 on the north
edge of Algona and offers many opportunities for study.
