Kossuth County Economic Development Executive Director Maureen Elbert announced today that she has received confirmation that former star Gary Kroeger from the late night sketch comedy “Saturday Night Live” will be the main speaker at the annual county-wide breakfast, which will be held this year on Tuesday, August 22, 2006, at St. Michael’s Parish Center in Whittemore.
Gary Kroeger was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and attended Northwestern University, where he studied theatre, radio, television and film. It was here that he and fellow alums Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Hall created the Practical Theatre Company. These sketches caught the eye of Saturday Night Live producers and the three of them became regulars on the venerable late night comedy show.
After 3 years in New York on SNL, Gary moved to Los Angeles and landed a short lived series on CBS, called “Spies” with George Hamilton. Gary later produced his daytime chat show “The George and Alana Show”. Television appearances on “Columbo”, “Murder She Wrote”, “Night Court” and “LA Law” led to starring roles in the forgettable films “A Man Called Sarge”, “The Return of the Shaggy Dog” and “Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again ”. There are a few good films sprinkled in there, but Gary went on to host revamped versions of “The Newlywed Game” and the classic “Beat the Clock”.
Gary moved back to his hometown of Cedar Falls two years ago in order to raise his family in a different environment. There Gary works as the Creative Director for The Mudd Group, a nationwide advertising and marketing agency. In the last year, Gary starred along with his wife, Leigh, in “Man of La Mancha” at the Cedar Falls Playhouse.
